The protagonist

I made a visit to the Tracy Williams Gallery on west 23 Street to see the opening of Norwegian artist Olav Christopher Jenssen. The exhibition named The Protagonist – New York edition is really a highlight and pick of the week. I missed to see some of his pieces shown at Moderna Museet in Stockholm last year and I must say I know little of Jenssens’ previous work. So the exhibition definitely gave me a warm feeling. It felt fresh without being eager to impress. I also really got a great impression of the artist, who had his hole family in the gallery helping out during the opening. He comes across like a really genuine man, something Young Art always want to lift up. Getting to see the artist behind the work makes it so much more interesting – at least to me.

Art art art

Last week was all about art here in NYC. My first visit was to the Armory Show at Piers 92 & 94. Here are a pick of my favourites. Rest of the photos are now in our Flickr stream.

And here some favourites from Volta – where  a younger scen of artist are shown. I definitely found these a lot more exciting. Some truly amazing artists here.

Notice that these two next ones are drawings!!

Also Swedish artis Willem Anderson from Gallery Niklas Belenius had a few pieces on display.

These two last images from the artist EVOL are probably top 3.

This is a photograph of an installation the graffiti artist EVOL did in an old warehouse. The cubes in the picture are at knee hight. The building is now destroyed.

Phew. For even more photos check out the links or our Flickr.

BACK TO THE FUTURE – Irina Werning

“I love old photos. I admit being a nosey photographer. As soon as I step into someone else’s house, I start sniffing for them. Most of us are fascinated by their retro look but to me, it’s imagining how people would feel and look like if they were to reenact them today… A few months ago, I decided to actually do this. So, with my camera, I started inviting people to go back to their future.” Irina Werning photographer

Kände att jag var absolut tvungen att sprida detta fina fotoprojekt. Fler bilder hittar du här!

Giving wings to Street Art

Using Google’s street view Red Bulls latest project Street Art View enables you to tag your local street art and in return let people find them from anywhere around the globe. By tagging yourself and adding images to the location this is aiming to become “the biggest art collection in the world”. Even though Google’s street view doesn’t give you a crystal clear image the rough style gives a nice touch to the project. It’s pretty cool to zoom in on Banksy or even stuff from your own street. Check it out.

Dia:Beacon

Introducing the first blog post from NYC will be about our trip upstate to Dia Beacon. We took the train for about 90 min to Beacon, located on the Hudson River. Only a short walk from the station in an old Nabisco factory (National Biscuit company) is Dia:Beacon. The galleries in total is nearly 300,000-square-foot and was opened in may 2003. It’s run by Dia Art Foundation and holds a permanent collection of major works of art from the 1960s to the present.

Dia Art Foundation was founded to support individual artists and to provide places where their art could be displayed without being split up. Dia:Beacon’s galleries were specifically designed to display those artworks, many of which, because of their character or size, can’t easily be accommodated by more conventional museums. Each artist’s work is displayed in a dedicated gallery, chosen and created in collaboration with the artists themselves.

One of my favourites is a piece by Andy Warhol specifically because all its consisting 154 canvases, are shown together in one big gallery, just like the artist had wanted it.

Dia has also kept a lot of the structure from the old factory. The hole museum isl lit only by natural light from the skylight windows on the roof. Making the opening hours shorter during wintertime.

Personally I think the most spectacular piece is probably the presentation of wall drawings by Sol LeWitt. The drawings were selected by the artist himself but were not executed by him. Sol LeWitt gave exact instructions on how to execute and show his drawing. The ones shown at Dia:Beacon were executed there for the first time.

Images borrowed from Dia.
