Kenneth Bamberg & Kristofer Hedberg

Kenneth Bamberg and Kristofer Hedberg both explore and question traditional approaches, power and dominance through their art. NAU gallery is proud to present the artists in the exhibition Props for thought.

Recurring themes in Kenneth Bambergs (b.1981) work is the exploration of cultural constructions of masculinity where the tension lays in male characteristics that differ from the traditional ones. The driving force is the template that the artist himself felt that he was formed into already as a boy, including things that were expected of him within the confines of masculinity. The embellishment of nostalgic thinking about masculinity as an unbreakable ideal inspires Bamberg in his study, where he among other things has photographed sauna bathers, Japanese fishermen and Turkish wrestlers. In the exhibition displays Kenneth Bamberg his work Flowers, which is a collection of portraits of Shan-tribe boys undergoing a manhood ritual in northern Thailand. Dressed in bright colors and adorned with makeup, the boys mimic the young Prince Siddharta before he became Buddha. Charged with aesthetic values and free from physical trials, the purpose of the ritual is to show that the boys are becoming mature and responsible men.

Kristofer Hedberg (b. 1980) uses art as a method to process and express emotions and thoughts that arise through actions. In the form of sculptures and installations, the symbolic objects take a role of props for the artist’s own thoughts in a study of the human behavior. Authority, history and masculinity are recurring topics in Hedberg’s artistry, where submission becomes his driving force for an investigation of the various instruments that are used for prevailing power. Kristofer Hedberg displays an installation of two sculptures, which questions control, influences and the audience in a group. What happens in the transformation of power and the opportunity to ride on authority? Is it a game, revenge or abuse? Through the installation the artist hopes to involve the audience in the room where the question arises whether to cheer, observe or act.

Jonas Roos / Hemlängtan

JONAS ROOS / HEMLÄNGTAN
OPENING 10 FEBRUARY 5PM-8PM

NAU GALLERY / YOUNG ART
HUDIKSVALLSGATAN 4B, STOCKHOLM
16 FEBRURAY-17 MARCH

In his works of photography he frequently uses walking as a method. He takes on unplanned walks through the city and lets its architecture and surroundings navigate him, with the goal of having new and genuine experiences by letting go. In the exhibition he will be showing the photographic series “From Västberga to Ulvsunda”.

Karl Henrik Edlund (1987) is a Swedish-speaking Finn photographer based in Stockholm.  Edlund is graduating from Nordens fotoskola Bisköps-Arnö in spring 2013 and has previously studied photography in Lofoten folkehøgskole in Norway and Novia, University of applied science in Finland. Röknäsor, elefanter och regnbågar

4.okt – 1.nov 2012, NAU gallery, Hudiksvallsgatan 4b

”On Chance” — Young Art & Berns

To celebrate the year of August Strindberg, Young Art presents an exhibition in collaboration with Berns that depicts on two cultural revolutionary phenomena of our time — the Internet and graffiti. The exhibition has a starting point in Strindbergs theory of natural creation, showing both light installations and traditional paintings. The opening is on the 31st of October at Berns Asiatiska at 17.00 – 19.00.

2012 is the year of August Strindberg. For those who don´t know, Strindberg was a central person in his contemporaries — a cultural hub and a dynamo in Swedish cultural life — mostly known for his poets. Strindberg was in much sense ahead of this time, often finding himself in trouble of windy weather. Hundred years after his death, the artists Mathias Quisth and Thomas Hämén interpret the national poet’s artistry — with a starting point of the coincidental.

In an article “On Chance in Artistic Creation” from 1884, Strindberg writes that the coincidence has a significant role in the creative process. He reasons that his painterly process is characterized by intuition and coincidence with the intent to mimic nature´s way of creating. With reference to graffiti and digital visual culture the two artists, Thomas and Mathias, have created a suite of paintings that is completed with a light installation that captures the randomness of Strindberg´s theory of natural creation. The installation is site specific and uses the location of the great hall of Berns Asiatiska to create a light sculpture in a constant randomness of changes.

As a celebration of the year of Strindberg 2012, Young Art wants to invite you to join us at the opening of the exhibition at Berns, 31st of October at 17.00 – 19.00. RSVP to vernissage@berns.se before 30th of October.

Welcome!
