Sweet inner Bastard by Marion Fink

Sweet inner Bastard by Marion Fink // 23 augusti – 30 september 2012

With lustful and intense liberation, Marion Fink encapsulates inner desires and limitations throughout her work. The uncontrollable and bestial is pitted against reason and social norms in a constant internal struggle. With a love-hate relationship and a dialogue between the rational and irrational the artist approaches her “inner bastard” – with a desire to set it free and let it run amok. But is it possible without subduing someone else?

In the exhibition Sweet inner Bastard, Marion Fink explores the topics of individuality, sexuality and relationships, having her own body close at hand. She works with classical oil painting and video, both of which are characterized by a raw physicality and unabashed immediacy. In the paintings the viewer encounters the presented characters with an eye contact. Their gaze is intrusive and seeking a connection, involving the viewer to participate in the event. In her video work, her actions are observed more from the outside. With drastic but simple acts, the artist investigates feelings that occur when internal desires and wishes cannot be satisfied.

Marion Fink (b. 1987) is born and raised in Bavaria, Germany and lives in Stockholm since 2009. She has participated in numerous of group shows, including Liljevalchs Vårsalong 2012, Vasa Konsthall, Finland and Young Art co / Ateljéprojektet.

Marion graduated from Gerlesborg School of Art in the spring of 2012 and will continue her studies in Fine Art at Hochschule für bildende Künste in Hamburg, Germany.

6 questions // Marion Fink

Why art?

The fact that I started to make art in the first place is the result of a series of fortunate coincidences.  I grew up in a small town in Bavaria were it was not really an alternative to become an artist. I had basically never been in contact with art until 3 ½ years ago when I moved to Sweden because of love. Unconsciously I have always expressed my thoughts and feelings through pictures, above all in my teens were I drew a lot. When I discovered art it felt like a revelation. I had found home. Nowadays I can’t imagine myself working with anything else.

What kind of methods/material do you use in your art?

My pieces start within myself. Emotions transform to emerging pictures. I start sketching with the camera, arrange the images I am looking for and mount my models. Later, the photographs act as framework for my paintings. I usually paint oil on canvas. My figures are painted in natural size or bigger, which makes them more tangible both for the observer and myself. If a picture or a feeling requires movement I make a video instead, sometimes I experiment with both. I work fast and follow my impulse and intuition. When an idea has become a picture in my head, I translate it directly because from that moment and on the next idea and image takes over.

Regarding the theme of your work, what is it that drives you / inspires you?

The biggest source of inspiration and drive I find within my surroundings and myself. Some of my favorite artists are Marina Abramovic and Pippilotti Rist.

What made you start working with your “inner bastard”?

I felt that I was both trapped and restrained. I wanted to experience and explore even that part of me that I otherwise would keep a secret or repress. It concerns a hidden struggle between what you want and what you should.

 Who is your inner bastard?

My inner bastard is the animalistic, uncontrolled and mismatching side of myself. It is my desires and compulsions.

In the end, what is it that you wish to convey with your art?

I want to evoke feelings and questions within the observer. That they listens to the feeling within themselves.

Behind the scenes

Things are on fire these days! Moving, painting, building, hanging, writing, filming…

It’s been a busy period at Young Art the last couple of weeks and we love it! The 1st of August we moved our luggage from Artillerigatan to the “gallery cluster” in Vasastan — or to be more specific — to Hudiksvallsgatan 4b. So far we are liking the spot, the property is amazing compared to previous conditions and most importantly, our artists love it! With that said, we are hoping to bring our own vibe to the neighborhood — the one we always do and always will promote — that art should be fun and accesible!

That’s why we welcome all of you to our grand opening this Thursday between 17.00 – 20.00 where we will also be presenting our first solo show by our lovely, talented artist Marion Fink.

Below you can see some shots we took last Sunday while preparing the hanging and filming for our first artist promo film (made by our friend Ashlee Christman at The Republic of Media. Thanks Ashlee!). To see the film, click here

Stay tuned for more exciting news and see you all on Thursday!
